The Revolutionary Retrofit

When it comes to green data centers, the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) at the University of Colorado in Boulder is in a league of its own.

That’s one reason why the NSIDC’s Manager of IT Services, David Gallaher, was invited to be the opening keynote speaker at the Green Data Center Conference in San Diego this month. If you’re attending the conference, don’t miss Dave’s presentation called The Revolutionary Retrofit: How to Massively Cut Energy Use and Improve Reliability.

In his presentation, David will highlight how the NSIDC cut its overall power consumption by 70%, reduced its cooling energy by more than 90%, and brought its PUE rating from 2.03 to an average of 1.15—all while meeting American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) standards. His unique retrofit project included virtualization of IT equipment, a photovoltaic solar powered UPS, and a new HVAC design built around eight of our Coolerado air conditioners.
